Gennady Korotkevich won two international competitions in programming during summer 2014
Belarusian prodigy Gennady Korotkevich won two international competitions in programming this summer.
Firstly he became the strongest programmer at "Yandex. Algorithm" second time in a row. This championship took place in Berlin on August, 1. Belarusian student from Saint Petersburg State University of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics solved correctly 4 of 6 proposed problems in 100 minutes.
3890 participants from more than 70 countries including 161 people from Belarus took part in the championship. Gennady Korotkevich acting under the nick “tourist” became the only Belarusian representative in the final among 25 finalists.
The main intrigue of the competition was the struggle between Korotkevich and Petr Mitrichev, Google Moscow office employee. Last year Korotkevich solved three of the six proposed tasks and spent less time than others and won the championship. Petr Mitrichev was the only one who tried to solve the problem "C" and made a mistake. As a result, the Russian took fourth place.
12 finalists made 4 tasks and in the dark hoping to get less penalty minutes. Korotkevich correctly solved four of six tasks and finished with only 66 penalty minutes. For the victory he received 300,000 Russian rubles ($ 8.5 thousand).
The second place went to Japanese Hosaka Katsuhiro (University of Tokyo), who also solved four tasks but with 90 penalty minutes. The third place went to Wang Kinsch from Chinese Tsinghua University.
Gennady Korotkevich also won the annual competition in programming Code Jam Google.
Nearly 20 thousands programmers competed in four rounds online this year. 25 of them (the representatives of the United States, China, Japan, Ukraine, Poland, Russia, Korea, Czech Republic, Brazil, Bulgaria and Belarus) reached the final which took place in Google LAX on August, 15.
The 18-year-old Belarusian coped with the tasks better than other finalists. The second place went to Eugene Kapun from Russia, Ijaw Gu from China became the third.
Gennady Korotkevich received $ 15 thousand as the main prize of the competition.
Gennady got the right to compete in the final of Code Jam only this year when he became 18. Last year he also claimed to enter the final but because of the too young age he could not participate in it.
Gennady Korotkevich is known for his unique phenomenal abilities from school. At age of 11 he won a silver medal at International Olympiad in Informatics among schoolchildren and later he became a multiple champion. In 2014 he was also the best at Facebook Hacker Cup 2014.
Despite the fact that Gennady is called a prodigy he does not think so."Of course, my success is the result of training. But it is interesting for me and I am passionate about programming and problem solving," - says Korotkevich. "I began to program very early with the help of my parents. They teach programming in Gomel State University".
