The symbol of the Polish capital is Warsaw's famous mermaid with the face of a girl from Belarusian Palesse. The model of sculpture, which was installed in 1939 on the bank of the Wisla, was Christina Kagelskaya a native of the village Mazurki (near Baranovichi, Brest region).

Christina Kagelskaya was born in 1914 in a family of landowners. Her Mother Janina was biologist and had PhD, her father John was an engineer and Palesse governor from 1926. Her Grandfather participated in the Kalinouski Uprising and for that he was send to Siberia.

After graduation from high school in Brest Christina studied geography and anthropology at the Warsaw University. She wrote poetry, music and songs and also sang her own songs. Her repertoire included a lot of Belarusian folk songs, which she performed on the Polish Radio in Vilnius and Warsaw.

In the middle of 1930 the young student and poet was noted by sculptor Ludwig Nitshova, who offered her to pose during the creation of the symbol of Warsaw.

This sculpture was the only monument that survived in the capital after the Warsaw Uprising in which Christina Kagelskaya also took part. She died on August 2, 1944, on the second day of the Uprising. One of the Warsaw's School was called in her honor.
