The song “God bless America”, which became, in fact, the unofficial anthem of the United States, has been written by immigrant from Belarus, Israel Berlin.
There are several possibilities concerning his birth city. It could be Tyumen (Tumen) or any one of several villages near the city of Mogilyov, Belarus. His father, a cantor in a synagogue, uprooted the family to America, as did many other Jewish families in the late 19th century. In 1893 they settled in New York City.
Life did not seem to promise much to immigrants. Berlin did not bring any money. That had to the fact that Irving after the end of the two classes of ordinary school go to work. On the streets of New York there were another thirteen seller of newspapers.
