Dmitry Sholokhov won the 10th season of the popular American TV show "Project Runway," in which fashion designers compete.
As part of the winner’s prize package, this season’s victorious designer received $100,000 from L’Oréal Paris to start his own line, a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine, a 2013 Lexus GS 350, a $50,000 technology suite by HP and Intel to create his own vision and run his business and the opportunity to design and sell an exclusive collection at Lord & Taylor.
Dmitry Sholokhov left Belarus at the age of 18 with a backpack, some cash, and a big dream. It seems like his dream has come true.
In the end, the judges were "wowed" by Dmitry's final collection. "It's rich honey, it's everything," gushed guest judge Jennifer Hudson. After he was crowned the winner, Heidi Klum said to Dmitri, "You have your wings now, so go and fly."
“I knew that I wanted to be a fashion designer from a very early age and I was actually a professional ballroom dancer. I started sketching very, very early, maybe around age 8, 10 and by age 11 I was already sketching the costumes for myself, my partners, my friends. My grandmother was quite a fashionista and my father was an artist so it’s in my blood. Then I had a chance to go to the United States and I knew that there are great fashion schools here so basically, long story short, I was able to graduate from Parsons. While being at Parsons, I was working for J. Mendel and then I was working for Domenico Vacca, then I was working for Jones Group for Jones New York and Anne Klein and just, you know, I had experience in the professional world for quite some time so I was very ready.”
Wanting to see his designs on the runway, he quit his job and sold his apartment in New York, leaving himself with no backup plan if he didn't win Project Runway.
By the way, during the show Dmitry has lost 18 pounds.
Dmitry Sholokhov is going to create his own brand, which will carry his name and in the near future he is going to look for business partners and investors.
“I really have to start moving so I’d love to start my own brand but I need to find the right people. I definitely need a business partner and an investor. Plus, other opportunities will come to me and I’m sure there will be a few and I’ll have to take a look so whatever comes, I’m open for it.”
